Magela Herrera’s musical voice is shaped by a dual foundation: her family’s deep-rooted Afro-Cuban traditions and her formal training in classical music at Havana’s Conservatory of Music and the Instituto Superior de Arte. This early grounding evolved into a dynamic, genre-crossing practice that bridges Latin jazz, European jazz, and improvisational forms. From 2004 to 2011, she honed her craft as a member of Mezcla, one of Cuba’s leading jazz and fusion groups, earning a nomination for Best Solo Flute from Jazz Corner magazine for “Quien tiene el ritmo” on the album I’ll See You in Cuba, which was also nominated for Best Album.

JAZZ at MOCA is South Florida’s longest-running free outdoor jazz concert series and one of the museum’s most beloved public programs for in-person open air musical entertainment. Since 1999, Jazz at MOCA has been presented on the MOCA Plaza on the last Friday of the month.
